Majuli is a beautiful Island in Assam, India. It has the credit of being the largest River island in the world, as stated in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Majuli River Island is often called the Soul of Assam. It has a total area of 452 square kilometers and is surrounded by Brahmaputra River and Subansiri River, with a total of 144 villages.
The island has also been the hub of Assamese neo-Vaishnavite culture, initiated around 16th century by the great Assamese saint-reformer Srimanta Sankerdeva and his disciple Madhavdeva. They initiated the tradition of Satras and these Satras have preserved Sattriya dance, literature, bhaona (theatre), dance forms, mask making and boat-making.
In June 2016, Assam Government had officially declared the island as the district making it India's first island district.
The island has been nominated for the World Heritage Site status. It has been included in the tentative list by UNESCO.
Majuli is a mystique place wrapped in its rich history and culture, and hence a must visit place in Assam.
Majuli Island can be visited at any time, but if you can visit this amazing Island, during Raas Leela festival held in mid-November which is the main festival of Majuli with performances based on Lord Krishna, it will be the best.
