Darkness
by Ananya Sarkar
(Kolkata, India)
Tick tock tick tock tick tock
The world keeps whirling, and twisting and turning
And I keep waiting, and waiting and waiting...
After sundown, I gradually emerge
From behind trees and inside closets
Flowing from the night blue sky
Still, people resist me
Lighting lamps and candles at doorsteps
Turning on the electric light
Yet I keep time, moving cautiously outside the lit homes
Until the lights dim one by one, then blot out
It is now that I hold complete reign.
Gently, I wring the tears out of the lonesome woman
Bring forth a sigh from the careworn child
And hidden from everyone’s sight
Make the star-crossed lovers hold each other’s hands
Seeking to right the wrong.
Oh I do so much for them
Bringing each one into his own
Yet no one loves the Darkness
They can only crave for light.
