Be Silent All

Behold!
That unearthly light
With such eerie speed-
Fleeting
Across the sky pale,
Flashing!
Pauses,
Just for a second-but a second fraught
With the fate of a nation rent
By the wail of hearts
Entreating
The light to stop!
Hush, grim darkness swoops
Over daylight
Dazed
Beyond hope!
“OUR NEHRU IS DEAD!”
Cried out the voice,
Then moaned low
Like a babe lost,
“OUR NEHRU IS GONE!
World seemed to stand still,
Life around dead,
Save for that one word
‘JAWAHAR !’
Can I ever erase from my memory
That short
But emotion-fraught
Minute?
“MY. . . . STAR. . . . .IS . . . . GONE! ‘
Echoed and reechoed
The stricken whisper of ‘MOTHER INDIA’,
Sudden grown old,
“MY LIGHT HAS FLED. . . . . . . . . . “
