Unfair-y Tale
by Ananya Sarkar
(Kolkata, India)
Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty
How you have made me pine for beauty
Beauty – the prized possession
That dazzles the eye
And wins the heart
And conquers millions by the hand…
Oh, how I have aspired for it
Ever since a child –––––––
But beauties of the fairy tale world
You set beauty as a prerequisite, a stepping stone to virtue
Your prettiness and charm superseded in the end
All other qualities…
People have memorised your names over the ages
Paragons of goodness, they say
So young, so innocent, so pretty
But to the ugly girl at the corner of the room
Have you been able to set an example?
Or been able to be true…?
