Every great and original writer, in proportion as he is great and original, must himself create the taste by which he is to be relished.

Thoughts on Writing Writing is a very satisfying medium of expression. It is available to all those who have the urge to write. The last fifty years have seen a spate of Indians writing in English. Some have won awards and plaudits from all over the world. Numerous websites offer writers a platform where they can showcase their stories and articles.
No person can succeed as a writer unless he/she has a genuine urge to write. There is no better way to start the creative juices flowing than by putting pen to paper.
There are different kinds of writers. Some write in fits and starts whenever an idea crops up. Others write when they get some time, which may be very infrequent. But there are disciplined writers who have a time schedule, and stick to it. Such writers have the joy of following their dreams and making them come true. Words are the building blocks of their dreams.
“Never give up your dream,” says Mark Twain, “For when they are gone, you will still exist but cease to live.”
Writing requires both sides of the brain to act. The right brain is the seat of creativity. The left brain translates creative impulses into words. Writers therefore require ‘Alone Time’ to think and visualize the images that they wish to express in words. Ideas can sometimes be fleeting. They must be jotted down before they vanish.
It is a good practice to keep a journal. It becomes a repository for ideas, dreams or even life stories. A journal is one of the valuable tools to ensure success in writing. Writing regularly boosts creativity, increases confidence and helps evolve a personal style.
“True ease in writing comes with Art not chance, as those move easiest who have learnt to dance,” says Alexander Pope.
A writer must also be a voracious reader. It helps to familiarize oneself with the style, word play and dialogue of famous writers.
Joining a writers’ group is good for mutual encouragement, exchange of ideas and constructive critiquing of your work.
Personally, I find writing a pleasure. It challenges my creativity in shaping fictional characters and bringing them to life in different settings.
Oh the adrenaline rush when a story or article is completed!
Writing is also cathartic. Here a journal comes in handy. It is a safe place to reveal one’s most private thoughts – frustration, anger, grief and other emotions. Once expressed in words, there comes a general feeling of relief.
Writing also brings the thrill of knowing that others may have read and enjoyed your stories.
So spread your writing over a large field. It may even catch the eye of an editor or publisher.
